ACT Learner Driver Guide

Planning the journey from learner to independent driver requires structured practice, clear milestone goals, and professional guidance across Canberra's road network.

Getting Your ACT Learner Licence

Organising Safe Supervised Practice

Before driving on public roads, check your eligibility and the steps to obtain your learner licence. Access Canberra explains the required course, assessments and application process in its ACT learner licence guide.

Arrange regular practice with a suitable supervisor and record your driving in your logbook. Start in quiet areas, then gradually practise different roads and conditions as your skills develop. Choose safe conditions that match your current experience.

• Preparation & Progression

Preparing for Lessons and Building Skills

Preparing for Your First Lesson

Progressive Skill Development

Bring your valid physical learner licence, logbook, and prescription glasses if required. Confirm an agreed pickup location with your instructor beforehand and write down specific questions you wish to ask.

Build skills step by step: steering, road positioning and observations first, then intersections, roundabouts, merging and parking. Practise making your own safe decisions with your instructor or supervisor still beside you. Learners must continue driving under supervision.

CBT&A vs Practical Driving Test

Applying for Your Provisional Licence

You can complete competency-based training and assessment (CBT&A) with an accredited instructor or take the government practical driving assessment. CBT&A assesses 23 driving competencies over your lessons. You still need to meet the other provisional licence requirements. Read our ACT CBT&A logbook lesson guide to understand how lessons and sign-offs work.

Check the learner licence holding period, supervised driving hours and Hazard Perception Test requirements before applying for your provisional licence. These depend on your circumstances. Use Access Canberra’s current provisional licence requirements and prepare the required records before applying.
